A Brownfield Redevelopment grant from the Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) will help the Huron County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority and Frankenmuth Credit Union redevelop 561 South Beck Street in the village of Sebewaing.

The property located at 561 South Beck Street is contaminated with petroleum volatile organic chemicals (PVOCs), and polynuclear aromatics (PNAs) from its former use as a filling station during the 1950s to the 2010s and included four leaking underground storage tanks. The property has remained vacant since the 2010s.
The $395,000 brownfield redevelopment grant from EGLE will be used to perform environmental activities to support the reuse of the site. The grant will pay for environmental site assessment activities, removal and disposal of contaminated soil, and the design and installation of a vapor mitigation system preventing migration of any remaining subsurface contamination into the planned structure. The 1.64-acre site will be redeveloped into a new 3,600 square-feet credit union branch office. The capital investment of $3,839,896 will increase the State Equalized Value from $5,400 to $1,343,963 and create seven full-time jobs.
The branch office will provide the village of Sebewaing and the surrounding communities access to small-business loans, personal loans, mortgages, student loans, financial planning, and counseling. The redevelopment is planned to incorporate several energy-saving features, including improved roof insulation and windows, energy-efficient mechanical, electric, and lighting systems, energy-efficient air quality control, and implement on-site solar trees for a primary power source and a solar-powered generator as a backup power source. The village of Sebewaing supports this project and highly anticipates the new employment opportunities and the increase in tax base within their community.
In addition to incentives provided by EGLE, the redevelopment is receiving local support from the village of Sebewaing, and support from the Huron County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority to make this project a reality.
