In observance of Women’s History Month, Nebraska Today has partnered with the Chancellor’s Commission on the Status of Women to feature female office/service staff who go above and beyond in their work at Dear Old Nebraska U. This Women of Service series will run in Nebraska Today through March 31.
The series continues today with Emma Dolenshek, administrative tech for the Biological and Physical Sciences Advisory Committee Business Center. Dodie Eveleth nominated her.
In her work, Dolenshek serves as assistant to the chair and vice chair of the Department of Chemistry. She is responsible for daily operations and administrative details in the Chair’s office.
“Emma is diligent about her day-to-day work activities and strives to be as efficient as possible. This makes things so much easier for everyone. When you have an efficient and very positive person, it just makes for a much happier work environment,” said Eveleth.
Dolenshek sat down with the Chancellor’s Commission on the Status of Women to discuss what inspires her on and off campus.
Tell us a little about yourself.
I’m originally from Wisconsin and moved to Lincoln to attend UNL. I liked it so much I stayed. I love winter and snow, and Christmas is my favorite holiday. I have a cat named Milo, and I like getting outside and enjoying nature. I also love to travel – of all the places I’ve been to, Japan was my favorite!
How long have you been at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln?
About one and a half years.
What do you look forward to when you come to work?
I love my coworkers. They’re there for me if I’m having a bad day or need help, making the day much better.
What is your favorite memory at the University of Nebraska–Lincoln?
Some of my favorite memories are of the events our department does. We have them throughout the year, and I always look forward to them. Especially our Chili Cook-off in the fall and dressing up for Halloween. The food at the cook-off is always delicious, and everyone gets creative with their Halloween costumes. It’s a ton of fun.
What is your life like outside of work?
Sewing and knitting are huge hobbies of mine. I’m much better at starting projects than finishing them, so I usually have a few going at a time. I also really enjoy going to antique stores and malls. You can find the oddest and neatest things. Otherwise, I enjoy walking and listening to music and podcasts.
What is something most people don’t know about you?
Most people don’t know I like to figure skate. I’ve always enjoyed it, and I was even part of a synchro team. I fell out of it after an injury and the pandemic, but I’m getting back into it again and loving it.
